Creating A Colour Scheme – Part 1 – Harmonious

To create a harmonious colour scheme you need to choose colours which sit side by side on the colour wheel, or at least very close to each other. It’s easy to create a well balanced and unified colour scheme which is pleasing to the eye using harmonious colours.
Pick colours which are of similar densities to achieve a balanced look where one colour doesn’t over power the others.
If you’re opting for primary colours choose three, possible four, shades from the same primary colour. If you want a bolder look simply pick deeper more intense shades. To create a striking look opt for a bright primary colour such as red and team with hot pink or use a combination of red and orange.
Harmonious doesn’t mean dull and boring! If you choose muted tones they can look equally as striking as bold, brash colours. Choose colours which reflect the style of your home and your own personality, after all you’re the person living with the colour day in and day out, so it stands to reason that you must like the colours!
Make walls colours either all the same or pick the focal point in the room, such as a chimney breast and paint that a different harmonious colour to make it stand out from the rest.
Likewise your curtains should also be within the same harmonious shades. If you want to add pattern to the room without using wallpaper your window dressing is the ideal place. Coordinate the look with matching cushions for sofas, this is also a great way to add different textures to the room.
Lounge curtains and bedroom curtains look at their best when full length, this will also add height to the room. The only time this may have its disadvantages is if your radiators are under the window. You could move them, but this is an expensive option, alternatively why not opt for made to measure curtains have have them sitting precisely on the sill to give a refined look which doesn’t interfere with your heating. Another way round this dilemma is to use a a combination of curtains and blinds. Leave the curtains swept open and use the blind to provide you privacy at night.
Suggestions:
Use rust and terracotta to create a warm and inviting look.
Try blue and purple for a more modern look, which is ideal for bedrooms.
