Creating A Colour Scheme – Part 3 – A Glance At Colour Meanings

Red – Different tones of red create different moods – passion, desire, courage. Pinks can either be delicate or shocking, feminine and added to fabrics such as children’s curtains they create a bedroom perfect for little princesses! The colour red is also good to use when choosing a focal point to bring attention. Also seductive in deeper tones and luxurious, the colour red always brings warmth throughout the house.

Orange – The colour orange is stimulating, inviting and is a great ‘pick-me-up’. A secondary colour made from red and yellow, it brings both the warmth and passion of red with a light, happy feeling that comes from yellow. Kitchens and living spaces are turned into warm and inviting spaces especially when using darker, earthier tones such as terracotta on flooring or window dressings.

Yellow – Bringing light into any room, yellow turns a gloomy day into a bright and cheery one. Its energising properties make it a good colour for entrance halls or for decorating smaller, darker rooms and the ideal colour for bedroom curtains in guest rooms to create a welcoming ambience.

Green – Green living has changed the way we live, even down to the colours we decorate with. Green is increasingly popular in the 21st century home and can bring the harmonious and tranquil feeling of natural spaces indoors. The bathroom is enhanced with the colour green as you give yourself a home spa treatment – it refreshes and soothes at the same time so opt for green blinds if you want to create an eco-friendly look which coordinates beautifully with natural wood to give your bathroom the spa look.

Blue – With blue you can really unwind and relax. This colour is great in rooms where you seek time alone to think and/or shut off from a stressful day making it the ideal colour for duvet bedding to coordinate with blue curtains.

Violet – Violet and purple shades are linked with royalty, opulence and luxury. Deeper tones are strong and dramatic, whereas lighter tones are more feminine and soft. Violet is a good alternative to red when creating a bedroom full of romance.

Neutrals – The most flexible of all colours, neutrals are very popular in contemporary design and they can be easy to live with, coordinating with a wide range of primary and on-trend sherbet tones.
