Creating A Colour Scheme – Part 6 – To Evoke Emotions
May 18, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment
Colours are brilliant to play with in the home as they can help to put people in certain moods and evoke emotions. Creating a colour scheme to bring out emotions is just one way of approaching your home decorating but one that can have incredible results.
Many people see their home as an extension to their self, so much time can be spent in the home and it can be the beholder of memories from special occasions or any other time in life when emotion played a big role.
You might retreat to your bedroom when you are sad, ill or having a generally bad day – surprisingly, the choice of colour may have an impact on how soon you get over your bad mood or minor ills. This doesn’t just apply to the bedroom, but every room in the home. Let us take a look in more detail at the different colours and how they can effect your mood and some ideas of using those colours within the home.

Red – Sense of Power, Impulsiveness and Love
Red can go in two positive directions in terms of emotion, but it can also bring negativity to some in the way of anger or a sense of danger and unrest. How red effects emotion will be different from person to person. For some, red will make them feel powerful, strong and undefeated. For others it will be exclusively linked to the emotions of love, passion and romance.
Blue – Satisfied, Comforted and Calm
As a cool colour, blue helps to lower blood pressure and the heart rate, helping to calm down more intense emotions. If you have had a stressful day at work, you want to unwind in a room that is calming like blue – not red which aggravates the mind further. The living room or bedroom are two areas in the home that work particularly well with blue.
Orange – Content and Energised
Very similar to the warm tones of red and yellow, orange comes with a happy vibe and is another colour that works well in the dining room to stimulate appetite. Orange is quite a demanding colour and can be difficult to co-ordinate with other colours – try toning it down with neutrals such as a pair of cream curtains or simply have it as an accent colour and used sparingly.
Purple – Creative and Magical
Purple is an interesting colour when it comes to emotions and moods. Many will argue that purple is not so much of a natural colour as you rarely find it in nature like you would blue or green.
It is often linked in with mysticism and magic, a wonderful colour for children’s bedroom curtains to aspire dreams and creativeness. Lighter shades of purple are very spiritual, so for those looking to understand their emotions, decorating a personal space such as the bedroom would allow for a calm surrounding for inner-thought.
