Far Away Design Inspiration – American Industrial Lofts

May 30, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment

American industrial style loft apartments are increasingly popular amongst the younger crowd or those centred around a career as opposed to a family. They can be very cheap to rent for those that are still training in their working careers and are often located conveniently in city centres or neighbourhoods.

The space offered in most loft apartments is compact and so you will need to have a think about possible floor plans to make the most of the space and décor that is streamlined and modern. Some loft apartments will have two levels so that you can easily define between the living areas and sleeping room.

If the apartment is on one level and open – you could always use some tricks to create a space for privacy. The industrial look is favoured in America and makes use of raw industrial metals such as steel and other metals, glass and brick. Let us take a look in more detail, how you can be inspired by this far away design.

Monochrome Colour Scheme:

Starting with colour, we see a lot of industrial style lofts using a monochrome scheme – black and white with grey is blended perfectly with the natural colours of steel and metal. White walls give the impression of larger and lighter spaces. To give your home some individuality and a little more of the ‘wow’ factor, take a bold colour such as red, hot pink or orange and use it in splashes throughout the apartment. The use of a block colour will also help to separate some areas – think about using a colour on kitchen units or if you have two levels that are open plan, paint one of the walls of the higher level in a bright colour.

Flooring and Furniture Design:

Flooring could go one of two ways – American loft apartments are frequently built with concrete floors, which can be a little chilly in colder months but they do look fantastic with the rest of the décor. Laminate wooden flooring is the other option and tends to be lighter woods such as beech or maple. A large rug would go nicely in the living space or by the bed – choose neutrals such as white or a light grey. Some thought has to go into your choice of furniture. If you are limited on space then you should choose beds that have drawers built in for extra storage. The kitchen would benefit from having both lower cupboards and high, wall cupboards for plenty of storage.

Contemporary Fabrics:

Rugs will be your best friend against cold concrete flooring – use them in the living space and by your bed in fabrics such as wool or fake fur. If you have ever watched some American sitcoms – you can really see this loft inspiration brought to life. Quite popular is the use of large cushions on a rug in the living space as a seating arrangement. Streamlined curtains are a must for this look – choose eyelet curtains which hang with perfect pleats in neutral shades.

Finishing Touches:

For hip and sophisticated finishing touches, have a look around antique stores for some retro style prints or posters to put on the walls – it could be from an advertisement for a food/beverage product, jazz or rock legends, an old cult movie etc. Mirrors work well too in a loft space – place them so that you can reflect any natural light into the apartment.
