Far Away Design Inspiration – Mediterranean Magic

May 21, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment

The Mediterranean style is full of charm, light and colours that represent the warmth of the sun and the coolness of the ocean. This far away design inspiration looks to countries that border the Mediterranean and can include a myriad of styles from continental Europe, Moorish Africa and the Middle East.

You can find ideas by looking at the interiors of homes from Southern Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey and the northernmost countries of Africa such as Morocco and Algeria. The main design elements will come from the magnificent Mediterranean coastline and the warm climate.

What does a magic Mediterranean design mean to you? – perhaps it is the decorating of oil paintings as found in Southern Italy or Spain, the white columns or labyrinth print from Greece, the colourful tapestries of Greece or Morocco’s mosaics and camel bone mirrors. The Mediterranean incorporates many designs and you shouldn’t have a hard time finding the perfect one for you.

Magic Mediterranean Colour Schemes

To get the look right from the beginning, you need to consider the use of colour and wall décor. Some of you may prefer walls that are neutral in colour, but have a textured look about them that gives a slightly aged or sandy appearance. If you are a fan of wallpaper – why not make a feature wall with wallpaper that has a column pattern to it?

White, terracotta and yellow are popular colours for the Mediterranean look – also ocean and sky blues. Terracotta has this fantastic warm, earthy feel to it that is reminiscent of the Moorish design. Once you have your base colour, add to it an accent colour to really bring some life into the home.

One very typical Mediterranean design element is the use of mosaics and you can use them to bring in your accent colour. Choose smaller, mosaic like tiles in the kitchen or bathroom and even have a go at creating your own mosaic on the front porch or in the garden.

Flooring And Furniture Design

Tiled flooring is usually the mainstay in Mediterranean homes as it is cooler in the summer and easier to clean! Choose furnitures that are made from wood and have either a rustic or elegant feel to them. Pieces of iron or marble are also found in furnitures.

Using Fabrics To Set the Scene

Fabrics can come in many designs – wall tapestries are popular hung up with wrought iron. Fabrics that are light and airy will work better than heavy, dark materials. Go for white or cream duvet covers with some terracotta accents in pillows or throws.

Moroccan chenille fabrics are another option in earthy reds or oranges. Another direction is to take inspiration from the sea with satin cushions in blue/green shades. Finish off with ready made curtains in shades of yellow, orange or even lightweight eyelet curtains in blue.
