Contemporary, Chic and Casual – Part 4 – Young Children’s Bedrooms

June 17, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment

As a parent who likes the contemporary and chic design trends, there is no reason why you can’t give your children’s rooms a makeover too – they will certainly love you for it! There are many things for you to consider when re-designing your children’s rooms and there is more of a nod towards being casual, functional and safe. Some of the uber-modern trends are not going to be ideal for your five or six year old darlings – so before you go ahead with the planning, take a look at the advice and decorating ideas we wish to share with you.

Children’s bedrooms can be contemporary, but at the same time, they must be fun and playful, safe and sound! When we speak of ‘young’ children we mean those that fall more or less between the ages of four and eleven – old enough to be out of the cot but not quite old enough to be a teen.

For children at the youngest half of ‘younger’, bedrooms should fulfil their fantasies and allow for adventurous play and creativity. There are some wonderful ideas to transforming a standard sleeping room into something more interesting for children. Putting in an element of surprise is fun and worth it.

Not every child will have the same interests and their will be differences even between little boys and little girls. For adventurous boys think about a pirate theme with hammocks and/or a bed base shaped and painted like a ship. Little girls will be all for sheer drapes over the bed for a princess theme and hideaway.

When choosing furniture, remember that children rocket up in size and you would be better buying items that will see them through until they leave home. A standard single bed will be better than a mini one and solid wood furniture will last longer than other materials. Bunk-beds are a good investment too and they come in various styles so that they can be used exclusively for sleeping two children or have a study area/play area below.

There are some great designs in ready made curtains and choosing ready made will make your life that little bit easier. Black out curtains are a good idea too when you want to train little ones to sleep in a little longer in the mornings! Through buying cheap curtains you can also change them in a few years when the colours and/or patterns are no more to the taste of your ‘hard to please’ teen.
