Contemporary, Chic and Casual – Part 5 – Guest Rooms

We all long to be the perfect host or hostess when we have guests over and this longing is even more so if they are staying over for a few nights. Families or friends travelling down to your place from afar will be hoping on a warm and comfortable welcoming into your home.
The contemporary home can always stretch to accommodate your loved ones and the elements of this style can really come into their own. Your mother will not have the same decorating tastes as your best friend and your nephew will not feel so at home in a room decorated in pink floral! By adopting the contemporary style of neutral colour palettes and clean lines – you stand a much fairer chance of pleasing any guests that happen to come your way.
It is also important to decorate the space casually and make it feel as homely as possible. Mixing contemporary with casual is the guest rooms best design partner and we have some tips and advice to help you achieve a wonderful guest room in your homes.

Bedding is very important and it is worth the effort to find some that offer optimum comfort. Think about a hotel look with crisp white cotton sheets and a nice plump duvet in simple colours or patterns. An all white bedding can be given more interest with using different textures or an embroidered pattern which blend naturally with any coloured bedroom curtains.
It is essential that you don’t use the room to store all of your loose ends and clutter – no matter how tempting it can be! Your guest, especially if they are staying for a week or more, will want to add their own belongings into the room. They will need wardrobe space and plenty of room on the bedside tables to put their own alarm clock/reading books/family photo etc. Give them space and lots of storage options.
A mostly neutral room can be made more welcoming with a splash of colour such as blue or green. Both of these colours are great for a relaxing atmosphere and are neither too old, young, boyish or girlie. Choose natural shades such as a light jade green or sky blue and add it in with accents to floor rugs, bed cushions or a piece of contemporary wall art. If you fear having too much white in the room you can also soften the look with cream curtains or cream wall paint.
