Choosing the right type of window dressing for a kitchen can be challenging. You need to chose something which is aesthetically pleasing to the eye, suit the style of your kitchen and has the ability to withstand the everyday rigours of dirt and splashes. We have 5 practical tips to having the best of both worlds – a practical and stylish window dressing.

1. If you have fabric blinds or curtains you need to ensure that the fabric is easily washable, therefore delicate fabrics such as silk are not the ideal choice. You could also opt for fabrics which are designed specifically for kitchens as these have a coating which makes them easier to wipe clean and also helps prevent dust from sticking to them.
2. Think about kitchen blinds, either fabric or bamboo roller blinds. They’re a cost effective window dressing option which if not wholly machine washable they can be easily sponged clean. A home-made Roman blind will add a charming perspective to your kitchen and work particularly well in country styled kitchens.
3. If you have a kitchen diner it makes sense to coordinate the window dressings. Ready made curtains are a good choice as you’ll be able to select different length sizes to suit. For example coordinating full length curtains in the dining area with shorter window sill length for the kitchen area will bring the two rooms together beautifully while still letting each part keeps its own identity.
4. Wooden blinds are an effective option. They can be sponged clean and coordinate with wooden cupboard doors and floors. Wood will bring a natural warmth to your kitchen, you could always add a fabric pelmet if you want to add a splash of colour to your kitchen window.
5. Café style curtains are ideal for kitchens as they provide privacy as well as letting the light in. As they’re hung at the bottom half of the window only you’ll need to also choose a window dressing which provides a complete window covering for evenings and night-time. Classical kitchen are the ideal partner for café style curtains.
Giving your kitchen window a new dressing is a great way to bring a new look to a dull kitchen. Look for bright colours and bold prints if the window is sufficiently large enough, alternatively a small print, stripes or block of colours are the perfect choice for smaller windows. Add a pelmet or valance in a contrasting colour to make smaller windows look larger.
