Living Room Interior Design Ideas: Bright & Sharp

January 30, 2012 by admin · Leave a Comment

Contemporary interiors focus on using sharp, clean lines to create stunning interiors which suit modern lifestyles superbly. With black and white being on-trend colours this year, we see designers adding a pop of bright colour to take the monotony off and add chic eye-catching style.

Probably the easiest way of adding a single pop of colour in your living room is to use the colour for your window dressing – whether that be lounge curtains, blinds or a combination of the two. You’ll notice that the typical addition of cushions or rugs in the same bright colour had been omitted this year in many contemporary interiors. The single ’shot’ of colour is all that is needed to change the dynamics of a room.

To keep on-trend chose tangerine orange, green, red or oceanic blue curtains any of these colours compliments black and white effortlessly. You could also use your curtains to bring pattern into your living room. This year the single large floral blooms are out, however, using patterns inspired by nature are bang-on trend, so you won’t go far wrong if you choose silhouettes of trees, leaves or flowers.

Another way to keep on-trend is to use a contrasting fabric for your window dressing. For example, black or white leather suites can be contrasted with sheer voile curtains – these will also soften the edges of a window. Don’t forget that the look is sharp, so you’ll need to use curtains which fall into uniform pleats – either with pencil pleats or the softer, curvier folds of eyelet curtains.

Use full length curtains as these will automatically add a sense of style and sophistication to a room. To keep the sharp edges the curtains should sit exactly on the top of the flooring – precision is a major key to getting the look right. Likewise, the curtains should also be as near to the ceiling, to create a straight fall of fabric. Having your curtains exactly the right length and width will show that you take your interior design style seriously.

The use of window blinds remain on-trend in contemporary interiors, however, for apartment windows where privacy is not a problem, sheer lightweight curtains are a preferable choice and an easy way to get the desired look and feel in your living room. You could always opt for lined voiles which will give a little more privacy should you feel the need.
