Curtain Ideas for Bay Windows: Doubling-Up

The architectural feature of a bay window should be enhanced rather than hidden. This unique feature can be dressing so that it becomes the focal point of a living or bedroom. With today’s advances within the world of interior design and in particular window dressings, finding the right style of curtains to suit the style of your home and your décor has become far easier than just a few decades ago.

Doubling-up is just one of the latest ways to dress windows and provides a chic style which is suitable for both traditional and modern bay windows. Choosing two contrasting types of curtains fabric is what makes doubling-up so effective. The colours can also be contrasting or complimentary depending on how much of an impact you want to make on the room.

Full length bay window curtains are the most effective – they will also help to balance the look of the bay by adding more height – ideally the perfect balance would be to have the width and the height identical, but this isn’t always possible.

Beige curtains can be doubled-up with pale cream curtains so that the contrast is obvious. Likewise plain curtains can be doubled-up with patterned, again so the the distinction between the two is obvious. If you use two almost identical fabrics and colours you run the risk of the window dressing looking as if you’d run out of one type and just used a close comparative – this is not the chic and elegant window dressing you’re aiming for!

As you can now easily obtain bay window curtain poles or tracks which enable you to draw the curtains as far round the bay as you wish; although when doubling-up it shows the curtains off beautifully if you allow one ’set’ of doubled-up curtains to hang at the angled sections of the bay during the day. Alternating heavy curtain fabric with lightweight, or using a lightweight voile either side of the heavier curtains will give your bay a chic and refined look which will automatically draw the eye to this stunning feature of your room.

Experiment and see which works best for the style of your room. The effectiveness of this style of bay window dressing is achieving great colour combinations which work in harmony with one another. By opening the bay up, so to speak, you’ll be able to take advantage of the additional space by placing furniture in the bay section or making a window seat.
